Unless you are able to afford to live in a large home with adequate storage, the rest of us spend an inordinate amount of time searching for the perfect space saving solutions. Too many of us resort to living amongst clutter because we are surrounding by miscellanea that we can find no suitable place for. However, with a bit of ingenuity it is possible for space saving solutions to be found, with many of the solutions being found in the unlikeliest of places - with anything from beds that fold up against a wall, thereby freeing up daytime space in a bedroom, to filling up a poorly-shaped alcove with a column of storage boxes. This is just the tip of the iceberg, however: there are a good many space saving solutions if you know where to look.

First and foremost, get rid of the stuff you obviously don't need and, I know that sounds obvious but you would be surprised at the amount of houseroom that is being given over to things that have never been used from the day they were bought. That said, you need to decide where you are going to store those things you do need - but not quite at the present time: Christmas decorations and out-of-season clothes, for instance. If they are going to be boxed up, make sure you are consistent about labelling those boxes otherwise you will never find what you are looking when you need them. If you are living in a small home you need to ensure that floor space is left exposed. However, there is a lot of unused height and wall space in many rooms that may well be enhanced by some attractive shelving units.

In fact, if you have a store such as IKEA near you, check out their ranges of open shelving. You will probably find that they also store attractive wicker baskets of a size specifically to fit the pigeon holes in those shelving units. This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to storage solutions but aesthetic boxes abound in shops nowadays, with many of them stacking: make a feature of them. The secret to space saving solutions is to think 'versatile'. If you are in the fortunate position of having to buy new furniture, choose a sofa that can double up as a bed for guests. If you had initially thought of a divan bed, maybe you would consider a metal bed-frame?

Whereas the divan goes right down to the floor, the bed frames have plenty of space underneath that is crying out as storage space. You can even purchase designated under-bed storage boxes that slide out on tiny wheels. If you have a dressing table or chests of drawers in your bedroom why not place this in the corner of your room, at an angle? This provides additional storage behind that piece of furniture, in part of the room that was previously, perhaps, unused. Believe me, if you go into each room and think carefully about the shape of each of those rooms, even just rearranging some furniture is likely to provide you with a number of previously unthought-of space saving solutions that could make the difference between clutter and elegance.

US Bed Sizes

A small double, UK double, and the Euro double IKEA all get a 220 cm x 260 cm flat sheet. The UK king size gets a sheet that is 265 cm x 275 cm. Finally, the UK super king size should be matched with a flat cover size of 280 cm x 290 cm.
